Calm Spaces.
Public spaces review site for older autistic people.
What we did.
The Problem
The team behind Calm Spaces approached Reborn Media with a brief to design and build a web app tailored specifically for older neurodiverse users. The goal was to create a platform where people could review and share public spaces based on how suitable and supportive they are for older autistic individuals - something with real social value, but few existing solutions.
The site needed to support user accounts, allowing individuals to add and manage listings, while also giving administrators a secure and separate login to oversee and manage submissions. Accessibility was at the heart of the project, with a strong focus on clarity, ease of use, and visual customisation to support different sensory needs.
Alongside the digital build, Calm Spaces also needed a full visual identity, including logo design, that felt welcoming, inclusive, and aligned with the users it aimed to serve.
The Solution
We built a fully custom web application using the Laravel framework - chosen for its flexibility, performance, and long-term scalability. Accessibility was prioritised from the start. The site includes visual mode options that allow users to switch between light, dark, muted colour palettes, and image-free modes to suit different sensory needs.
User accounts were central to the build. Visitors can register, log in, and manage their own listings, including uploading content for review. For administrators, we implemented Laravel Filament to provide a robust and easy-to-use backend for managing content, users, and moderation workflows.
The platform features powerful custom search tools, including filters by category and location radius, to help users quickly find relevant, inclusive public spaces. We also integrated a forum with single sign-on, so users can engage with the community seamlessly - supported by a range of automated workflows and email notifications built into the system.
